CEBU City’s Marc Nicole Suson captures three crowns to dominate the recent Talibon leg of the Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group Championship Series in Bohol.
Suson beat Dipolog City’s Stephen Zion Guia, 6-4, 6-2, for the boys’ 16-under, overwhelmed Bais City’s Wilfredo Gorospe, 8-1, for the 18-under title and teamed up with Bohol’s Scottie Jumamoy win the 18-under doubles crown, 8-4, at the expense of Kenchiro Suzuki and Guia in the tournament also sponsored by Dunlop.
Siquijor’s Ellaine Rose Bahonsua was also impressive. She won the girls’ 16-under with an 8-7 triumph over local bet Rica Trixie Gudelosao and partnered with 14-under girls’ champion Dianafe Perez of Bais City to win the 18-under girls’ doubles crown, taking out Mars Liquit and Angel Asenjo, 8-2, in the finals.
Perez beat another local player, Katrina Mekyla Siason, 8-5, in the 14-under championship of the event, the 13th leg overall this year and the ninth stop in the Visayas-Mindanao region.
“Again, what we are seeing in this leg in Bohol is a mix of old and new names emerging winners, and sooner than later, all of these winners will be familiar names in local tennis,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, president and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier, who initiated the series 11 years ago as his company’s support for a grassroots tennis program.
Mariam Yasmin Garsin of Tagbilaran City salvaged local pride by winning the girls’ 18-under title following an 8-4 victory over Gudelosao. Sogod’s (Leyte) Neous Elna Beronio edged Bohol’s Karyl, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, in the girls’ final.
Zamboanga del Norte’s Aaron Jacque Geromo won the 14-under crown at the expense of Harland Hogan, 6-0, 6-0; Bais City’s Jacob Diago took the 12-under title with an 8-4 win over another Boholano, Lander Joseph Butcon; and local bet John Kenneth Jumamoy was an easy 4-0, 4-2 winner over Kris Aaron Anub in the finals of the 10-under group in the boys’ category.
