According to UN-Water, the United Nations interagency coordination mechanism for all freshwater-related issues, 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with feces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.
World Water Day, celebrated on March 22 every year, aims to tackle the water crisis, including sanitation, water-related disasters, emergencies and other extreme events, and their impact on human security.
