TANDUAY used a strong first half on the way to a 78-60 blowout of Blustar on Thursday to stay on track for a better position in the playoffs of the Philippine Basketball Association Developmental League Aspirants’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Mark Cruz tallied a team-high 17 points while Jerwin Gaco and Paul Sanga contributed 10 points apiece off the bench for the Rhum Masters, who improved to 5-3 won-lost and stay in contention for the mad scramble for the third and fourth spots entering the playoffs.
“We know the scenario, how we’re going to perform or show up is another story,” Tanduay coach Lawrence Chongson said.
The top two teams after the eliminations earn outright entry to the semifinals while the third- and fourth-seeded teams will have a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Tanduay could clinch the fourth spot if it beats Jose Rizal University (JRU) at the close of the elimination round on Tuesday.
Notwithstanding their blowout win, Chongson didn’t conceal his disappointment over his chargers’ effort.
“I still don’t see the consistency. I’m not looking beyond JRU. Up to now, our performance remains a concern,” Chongson said. “Hopefully, we’ll jell in time for the playoffs.”
Tanduay led by as many as 31, 59-28, midway in the third quarter then coasted the rest of the way.
Cruz shot 6-of-9 from the field and also collected five rebounds and three assists.
