AJ LIM kicks off the country’s campaign against Indonesia in the opening singles of the Asia Oceania Group 2 Davis Cup Tie on Friday at the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) in Paco, Manila.
The world juniors No. 42 Lim takes on top-seeded Indon David Agung Susanto at 3 p.m.
Ruben Gonzales follows suit in the second singles against the visiting team’s No. 2 player, Aditya Hari Sasongko.
Lim, who at 16 dethroned Patrick John Tierro in 2015 to become the youngest Filipino to win the PCA Open, is playing his first Davis Cup tie.
Veteran Treat Huey partners with Francis Casey Alcantara in Saturday’s doubles competition against Anthony Susanto and Sunu-Wahyu Trijati. Gonzales plays Susanto and Lim battles Sasongko in Sunday’s reversed singles.
“We have assembled a strong team and I believe it has what it takes to beat Indonesia and bring the Philippines back to Group 1 of the Asia Oceania competitions next year,” Team Manager Jean Henri Lhuillier said.
The country hosted Chinese Taipei in a semifinal tie in July, but the team composed of Jeson Patrombon, Huey, Alcantara and Gonzales lost, 1-3.
