THE tollways arm of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) has set a keen eye on investment opportunities in Indonesia and Malaysia, as it continues to expand its portfolio of expressways in foreign lands.
Romulo S. Quimbo Jr., who heads Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corp.’s legal and regulatory division, said his group is planning to acquire shares in existing toll-road operators in the aforesaid countries for expansion.
“Our target areas are Indonesia and Malaysia. They have good toll operations, and they have good business models for toll roads. So we want to invest and share with them our expertise,” he said.
Quimbo did not provide specifics.
“These are well-built concessions for toll roads. We are looking at existing toll roads,” he said.
Currently, the company has significant interests in thoroughfares in Thailand and Vietnam.
The toll-road company is the parent firm of Manila North Tollways Corp., the operator of the North Luzon, Subic-Clark-Tarlac, Manila-Cavite Toll and the future Cavite-Laguna Expressways.
