LYCEUM of the Philippine University shocked defending champion College of St. Benilde, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10, on Tuesday to bolster its Final Four bid in the women’s division of the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan City.
Team captain Cherilyn Jhane Sindayen fired a team-best 16 points, including key hits in the fifth set, to power the Lady Pirates to a share of fourth place with the Arellano University Lady Pirates on a 3-1 (win-loss) record.
La Rainne Fabay, Patrice Mabelle Inton and Christine Miralles chipped in 14, 13 and 12 hits, respectively, to help seal the win for Lyceum, a many-time Women’s NCAA champion before it joined the NCAA.
The Lady Blazers absorbed their first defeat after winning their first four outings and fell to second place behind Grethcel Soltones and the San Sebastian Lady Stags, who remained undefeated in four matches.
In men’s action, St. Benilde trounced Lyceum, 26-28, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21, to jump to joint No. 2 with San Beda on a 4-1 card.
In juniors’ play, Lyceum routed La Salle-Greenhills, 25-11, 25-16, 25-8, for a share of the lead with Emilio Aguinaldo College with a 3-0 record.
