I NDEED, all the 400 or so vehicle displays at the recent Manila International Auto Show held at the World Trade Center and the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City, dazzled the thousands who attended the event. The exhibits, which included smart mobility, driving stunts, classics, aftermarket, technology, gadgets and newest innovations, surely tickled everyone’s fancy.
For this writer; however, what consumed me more was the truism behind the words of Manila Metropolitan Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Corazon Tecson Jimenez during her speech at the opening ceremony of the four-day affair.
In her message to the motoring industry, she said: “First, for the car manufacturers, continue to develop vehicles that are fuel efficient with less emissions; next, invest on research and development initiatives that will enhance vehicle safety; and lastly, further incorporate technological advances in road navigation and smart mobility.”
“For the motoring enthusiasts, always remember the person behind the machine is the centerpiece of this event,” she further added.
“What is more important is translating our passions for nice cars or putting these machines to good use in our daily struggles to go from home, work, school and other places. Respecting authority is important, too.”
With this in mind, there were several things from the event that captured my eye.
Hyundai Veloster officially introduced
It took eons before Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (Hari) officially unveiled the dashing Veloster in the local market.
Having been sold only on the gray market, this slick stunner is now being offered with its range-topping 1.6-liter direct injection turbo, which produces 207 ps. Its engine is mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Exterior-wise, it gets a mild revamp, while inside it now sports a two-tone interior finish along with an updated touchscreen infotainment system.
The venue also served as the place to launch the updated Santa Fe, the Elantra display and Hyundai’s newest truck and buses lineup. Even his Excellency Korean ambassador, Kim Jae Shin, was there to grace the ceremony.
Updated Subaru Forester
Fresh from its 2016 Bangkok Motor Show debut, the updated Subaru Forester was launched by Motor Image Pilipinas (MIP), which is now celebrating its 10th year in the country. The Forester now sports a new grille, taillights and wheels other than a new PIN code access, directional headlights and an updated X-mode system.
Undeniably entertaining was the legendary Russ Swift’s incredible driving stunts, particularly his two-wheeled trick of the Forester in the venue’s parking lot.
Refreshed Mitsubishi Mirage; Montero flaunts top-spec model
The refreshed version of the Mitsubishi Mirage imbued a more youthful vibe at the venue.
It now features a new front fascia with a new bumper, a wider air intake with chrome finish, new set of wheels and new taillights. Inside, it packs new gauges, redesigned seats and rearranged steering wheel controls. Plus, its top-of-the-line model gets to sport HID projector headlights with daytime running lights.
Meanwhile, Mitsubishi’s bestselling Montero won the attention of the crowd.
Ford launched extended Ecosport and Everest lineup
2015 was the year Ford Philippines caught up with the market by grabbing the third-biggest chunk in local auto sales. With their extended lineup of the Ecosport and Everest introduced at the show, they’re aspiring to keep the interest going.
“We expect that these latest additions to our showroom will contribute to our momentum, while reflecting our ongoing plan to continue bringing world-class global Ford vehicles to the Philippines,” said Lance Mosley, managing director, Ford Philippines.
The limited EcoSport Black Edition takes to the road a sportier and bolder look for the 1.5L Titanium, stylized with trim and accessories all coated with a black finish.
Its wheels, lower grille surround, roof-mounted bars, rear spoiler and many others carry the color of the night. With the Titanium variant’s halo, it gets to have a push-start button, rear parking sensors and Ford’s SYNC 2 infotainment system. The 4×2 Ford Everest, meanwhile, gets to sport a new top-of-the-line trim, which suits the various needs of the Filipino. The Everest 2.2 is now available with the Titanium and the Titanium Premium Package, bringing in the highlight features of the top-spec 3.2 Everest.
Jeep vaunts affordable Wrangler
Now on its 75th year, Jeep Philippines introduced the new Wrangler Unlimited five-door variant, Sport. This offering is placed under the Sport S with its removable step boards and alloy wheels.
The Wrangler Sport tips in below P2 million and is powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 mated to a five-speed automatic.
“The Jeep Wrangler can be your everyday, outdoor, adventure, toy car,” said Jeep Philippines Product Manager Michael Fernandez.
The success of the recent motor show is just icing on the big cake of the country’s burgeoning growth in vehicle population. And as part of this ever-growing motoring industry, I suggest that we ought to carry that bigger burden. We should take more responsibility in doing our part in this ever-changing world.
