THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and leading wireless provider Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) recently renewed a partnership to further improve weather monitoring and flood systems in the country.
The agreement allows DOST-National Capital Region to co-locate additional automated rain gauges (ARGs) in strategically located Smart base stations in Metro Manila.
Since 2012 Smart has secured the ARGs within its stations.
These ARGs also use the wireless networks of Smart to transmit sensor readings to the DOST’s central database, at least four times every hour.
With the data gathered from ARGs, the DOST hopes to eventually develop computerized flood forecasting models to help communities.
