Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. was named one of the world’s top central bankers for the fourth consecutive year, an international finance magazine published on Monday.
Global Finance magazine gave Tetangco a grade “A,” or the highest rating for a central banker, for his performance in 2014.
“Global economies are starting to recover, despite rising geopolitical risk in certain markets. Central bankers once again face challenging times in managing monetary policy to positively influence economic stability and growth—and some of the changes in our scores this year reflect those challenges,” Global Finance Publisher and Editorial Director Joseph Giaraputo said.
The international finance publication has given Tetangco the same recognition in the years 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013 and this year, making this year his sixth recognition overall and his fourth in a row.
The central bank chief of India, Israel, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Taiwan joined Tetangco this year in the class “A” governors handling their respective central banks.
“Every year we assess the determination of central bankers to stand up to political interference and their efforts at influencing their governments on such issues as spending and economic openness to foreign investment and financial services,” Giaraputo said.
Among the bigger economies, the European Union’s Mario Draghi was rated the highest with “A-”, unchanged from his previous year’s rating. Japan’s Haruhiko Kuroda, meanwhile, was rated “B+”, while China’s Zhou Xiaochuan was given “B-”.
The United States’s Janet Yellen was not given a rating, as the Global Finance magazine said it is “too early” to gauge her performance in the post.
Tetangco has been the governor of the BSP since 2005. He is the first central bank governor to serve the BSP in two consecutive terms after being reappointed by President Aquino in 2011. Tetangco will be in office until 2017.
