SUBIC BAY FREE PORT—After a huge turnout in the inaugural Subic Bay Summer Sports Summit here, organizers look to stage a bigger spectacle in the second edition of the sports festival next year.

The event, organized by the Subic Bay Free Port Chamber of Commerce (SBFCC) and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), in partnership with the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Olongapo City and the Subic Lighthouse Marina Resort, drew hundreds of participants from various schools in Olongapo City and Zambales. The events included beach volleyball, beach football and open-sea swimming, as well as 3K and 5K fun runs and a sandcastle-building contest.

Next year organizers hope to add more events and invite more participants from Central Luzon.

“While helping build up Subic’s image as an ideal destination for all types of sports events, we also hope to develop a team that would represent our community in the sporting world,” said SBFCC president Danny Piano.

YMCA-Olongapo president and event organizer Jun Nobles III added that the competition also raised funds for SBFCC’s community program and YMCA’s minilibrary project.

Aside from the Summer Sports Summit, other big sporting events being held in Subic are the Asian Duathlon Championships, Subic Adventure Race, Bike Festival Asia and the Subic International Marathon.

Last week the Triathlon Association of the Philippines held the 18th International Triathlon Union-K-Swiss Subic Bay International Triathlon in Subic, drawing 732 participants from 19 countries.

From May 21 to 23, meanwhile, hundreds of cyclists will converge in Subic for the second leg of the Pilipinas Cycling League’s Immuvit Race Against Time Series 2011.
