Today Singapore is one of the most exciting and must-see places in Asia. And with all the enticing promos and cheap tickets offered by airlines such as Cebu Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Silk Air, Philippine Airlines and Tiger Airways, traveling from the Philippines to Singapore is now so easy. So, what’s there to see in Singapore?
One of the favorites of both locals and tourists is the Snow City, which is conveniently located on Jurong Town Hall Road beside the Omni Theater near the Singapore Science Center main building. One can ride the MRT, get off at the Jurong East MRT Station and walk toward the Jurong East interchange—it will take just around 10 minutes. One can also catch SBS bus numbers 335, 66, 178, or 198 which all pass through Jurong Town Hall Road. Upon arrival at the Snow City, visitor must don snow jackets and boots before entering the snow chamber. It’s best to wear long pants and socks to avoid renting a pair of waterproof pants at the reception area. The “snow”— all 150 tons of it—is produced within the center every day using an especially designed snow gun, which maintains the required minimum depth of 400 meters. Ski or snowboard lessons are available all-year-round.
For a great nightlife experience, Clarke Quay (pronounced as “Clark Key”) along the River Valley Road is the place where the glittering lights, beautiful people and buzzing bars are. Originally a center of commerce along the Singapore River in the 19th century, Clarke Quay is now a labyrinth of restaurants, concept bars, retail stores and recreation outlets. The waterfront is now famous for delightful mix of modern and traditional cuisines set amid a backdrop of old shops where one can savor the many delights of Chinese, Italian, Mediterranean and local cuisine. Clubs like Zirca Mega Club, Azzucar! Alegro and Attica are famous names on the local night circuit, while restaurants and bars with a mind-boggling selection of themes and attractions round out your choice of after-sunset indulgence.
For bargain shoppers, Bugis Street is ideal as it is the largest street shopping location in Singapore. They have everything in one roof at Bugis, which is open from 11 am to 10 pm daily located along Bugis Street near the MRT Station.
For luxurious and highest-quality shopping, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel has stores like Alfred Dunhill, Bally, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Cartier, Chanel, Dior, Escada, Fendi, Gucci, Hermès, Miu Miu, Ralph Lauren, Salvatore Ferragamo, Stefano Ricci, Yves Saint Laurent and many more. Aside from the hotel, shopping and Casino at Marina Bay, the famous SkyPark with its 150-meter infinity pool located 200 meters in the sky can also be found on the 57th floor.
Now, one’s visit to Sentosa Island is worthwhile because of so many great things. One can now travel between Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) from VivoCity (Singapore’s largest shopping mall) on foot, in a mere 10 minutes. The famous Underwater World Singapore (UWS), situated at 80 Siloso Road on Sentosa Island, showcases more than 2,500 specimens and 250 species of marine life from around the region and is extremely popular for providing fun, leisure and educational experiences. UWS has had close to 30 million visitors since it opened in 1991. People embark on a spectacular underwater journey through the 83-meter-long moving travelator with a tunnel housing the majestic rays, fearsome sharks, great shoals of other fishes, and a host of other creatures that inhabit the ocean depths.
Another popular holiday and weekend getaway destination is the fantastic RWS, which attracts more than 2 million visitors per year. RWS is situated on a 49-hectare land area in Sentosa, where the brand-new Universal Studios and four hotels under its wing—Hard Rock Hotel, Hotel Michael, Festive Hotel, the exclusively-for-invited-guests-only Crockfords Tower and the latest luxurious casino—are located.
Entertainment is virtually guaranteed on the island. Universal Studios offers new rides and shows at its various attractions such as Hollywood, New York City, Sci-fi City, Ancient Egypt, Lost World, Far Far Away, Battlestar Galactica, Waterworld, Madagascar and more. At RWS, an international show called Voyage de la Vie (a theatrical circus spectacular) is shown from Wednesdays to Sundays, as well as the world’s first animatronic cranes in Crane Dance—a multimedia spectacle of lights, sound, water jets and pyrotechnic effects. Also shown every night is the Lake of Dreams, a unique musical extravaganza which combines the dynamic effects of water, fire and state-of-the-art laser technology shown every night for free.
Philippine passport holders don’t need a visa to visit Singapore, which makes it a great destination for those planning to take an out-of-town trip this summer.
