Mount Batulao, said to mimic the European Alps from afar due to its tree-less peaks covered with gently swaying cogon grass, derives its name from the words “Bato sa Ilao” which locals eventually abbreviated to “Batulao.” This refers to a phenomenon that occurs every year-end wherein the sun sets right between Mount Batulao’s twin peaks, creating a spectacular image of rocks surrounding a red disk of light.
Although the “Bato sa Ilao” phenomenon happens only during late December, Mount Batulao is a favorite climbing destination year-round for day hikers and novice mountaineers due to its proximity to Metro Manila. Its summit, situated 811 meters above sea level, offers an exhilarating 360-degree view of Taal Lake, Batangas province, the South China Sea and surrounding mountains like Mount Talamitam, making the three-hour trek worth all the sweat and effort.
The trek to Mount Batulao, categorized as a “Moderate Level 2, Minor Climb,” is open to climbers of all levels—from beginners and first-timers to more experienced climbers, aged 12 years old and above. Pro-level mountaineers will be on hand to facilitate the climb and ensure the safety of the participants.
A mountaineering orientation is scheduled before the start of the climb to brief the participants about Mount Batulao and to aid them with practical tips and information needed for the trek.

Set within 800 hectares of lush greens and undulating hills at the foot of Mount Batulao, Sandari Batulao is envisioned to be a mountainside self-sustaining community where residents and guests experience a laid-back lifestyle marked by a genuine respect for the quiet life and the natural environment. It is being developed by Citystate Properties and Management Corp., headed by former Philippine Ambassador to Laos Antonio L. Cabangon Chua and his Singaporean partners.
Located at Km77, Batulao, Nasugbu, Batangas, and 10 minutes away from Metro Tagaytay along the Nasugbu-Tagaytay Tourism National Highway, Sandari Batulao is just an hour-and-a-half drive from Makati via the South Luzon Expressway through the Sta. Rosa exit.
