    The latest on popwrecks

WHAT is the much-celebrated popwreck up to this time?

About a week ago, Britney Spears was photographed driving around on her own, like any other normal single mom. For all the paparazzi to see, she stopped at a Starbucks branch in Malibu and, later, in a gasoline station. In the car, for a few seconds she raised a copy of C.S. Lewis’s The Witch, The Lion and the Wardrobe, and looked like she’s reading it while sipping commercially glorified caffeine.

In another video now circulating on the Net, she was caught buying the latest CD of former squeeze Justin Timberlake. She didn’t go out of her car but instead asked one of the papparrazis to buy it for her. Why not just ask the bodyguard, Brit?

Speaking of celebrities and their bodyguards, another wild character in the pop-music scene got into trouble because of his “off-duty” activities. Or so it seems.

Rapper T.I., or Clifford Harris in real life, got arrested for reportedly buying guns without license a few hours before he was supposed to attend the second annual BET Hip-Hop Awards, where he was nominated in nine categories and eventually won two.

T.I.’s representatives later denied the charges, saying that their boss never tried purchasing guns illegally. And that it was all his bodyguard’s wrongdoing.

In an interview with a source posted on MediaTakeOut.Com, “[The bodyguard] asked T.I. for an advance on his [pay] and T.I. gave it to him....Whatever he spent the money on—whether it be guns, drugs or formula for his children—T.I. had nothing to do with it.”

The amount was reportedly $21,000. The police also found firearms in the rapper’s house, but the source reasoned out that T.I. has security people who live with him, and all were licensed to carry the guns. Chicago rapper Common, who won the CD of the year award along with T.I., tried to lend his support. “I salute my guy T.I., who also won, wherever he is,” said Common.

    Meanwhile, over at the poolside…

WELL, maybe the singular and irrepressible Lolit Solis, feisty talent manager and TV host, can charge it to serendipity. After all, as she detailed in her recent piece for the tabloid Philippine Star Ngayon, she found herself at the famous poolside of Hotel Sofitel one afternoon quite by mistake, as she was at the newly refurbished hotel to see some exhibit. Instead, according to her report, she saw what she was later told to be famous heartthrobs Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby enjoying a moment at the poolside coffeeshop that appeared rather conspiratorial, intimate, full of cheek-to-cheek whispers and sly smiles.

Alas, according to Nanay Lolit’s report, some waiter called out her name—she is, after all, a household name and face herself—at which point the two heartthrobs made a hasty retreat. Which naturally made the naturally curious and suspicious Lolit all the more curious and suspicious. Which led her to ferret out the information that, supposedly, Piolo and Sam frequent the poolside coffeeshop in the late afternoon when there aren’t a lot of curious or even remotely interested eyes around.

Of course, you might ask: So what if the two heartthrobs are having a moment at the poolside coffeeshop? And, of course, we could always assume that, hell, maybe they’ve developed a fondness for things British and are enjoying some variation of high tea. Believable enough?

    Happy mothers

JULIA ROBERTS declared she was most happy in her roles as wife and mother.

“I really am just a girl from a little town in Georgia, who had this giant, absurd dream,” said the Oscar-winning actress, who recently accepted the 22nd Annual American Cinematheque Award at a benefit dinner in Beverly Hills. Many of Roberts’ current and former costars were on hand to offer praise for the 39-year-old mother of three, who arrived on the red carpet in a cinched-waist black dress by designer Diane Von Furstenberg.

“Everybody loves Julia Roberts. Everybody, everybody, everybody,” said actor Tom Hanks, who stars with Roberts in the upcoming Charlie Wilson’s War. Roberts won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a legal crusader in the 2000 film Erin Brockovich.

Though honored for her contributions to the film industry, Roberts said she is most proud of her roles as a wife and mother. She thanked her husband, cameraman Danny Moder, for widening her life—and her hips. Roberts married Moder, 38, in 2002. They have three children, Phinnaeus, Hazel and Henry.

Meanwhile, there is news on Jennifer Lopez’s midriff getting bigger everyday. Despite her denials, talks persist that J. Lo is reportedly expecting twins.

The New York Post and US Weekly, among other tabloids, came out with several “exclusives.”  Indeed, fashion speaks louder than words, at least in her case. Lopez has been seen wearing loose, flowing garments designed by Roberto Cavalli, far from her tight-fitting, abs-baring outfits in the past.

Even Anthony’s former wife, Dayanara Torres, with whom he has two children, was asked for a comment. “They [children] don’t know yet, as I barely found out. But I suppose they’re going to be very happy, because when my sister had her kid, they were,” Torres said.

Maybe all this pregnancy talk is going to benefit J. Lo’s newly released album, Brave, which so far has failed to ring the cash register in manner of her earlier album releases. The unannounced preggy issue should make people go to the music store and check if she’s singing songs for the cradle.

IT’S getting easier all the time to fib with photos. First, photo-editing programs made it possible to tweak a photo in ways that once required hours of painstaking toil with an airbrush.
