UNIVERSITY of
Santo Tomas
(UST) could not keep the men’s basketball crown in
España but it looked well on its way to retaining the
biggest trophy as the Season 70 host led in the seniors’
general championship race after the first semester
hostilities of the University Athletic Association of
the Philippines (UAAP).
In an
unofficial tally obtained by the BusinessMirror, UST
amassed 152 points after ruling four of the 14 events
played so far—women’s taekwondo, women’s chess, women’s
swimming and men’s table tennis.
UST
placed second in four events—men’s taekwondo, men’s
swimming, women’s table tennis and men’s judo—and third
in three—women’s basketball, men’s beach volleyball and
women’s judo.
UST is
aiming for the general championship for the umpteenth
time as the Tigers are poised to fare strongly in the
second semester events. They are the defending champions
in five events (women’s volleyball, men’s football,
men’s baseball, and the men’s and women’s tennis). They
will also look to get respectable finishes in men’s
volleyball, women’s football, women’s softball, men’s
and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s fencing
and men’s and women’s badminton.
The
league gives 15 points to the school which wins a
championship, 12 points for second place and 10 for
third. It also grants eight, six, four, two and one
point from fourth to eighth place finishers.
University of the Philippines (UP) is running second
with 124 points. The Fighting Maroons topped men’s
swimming, men’s judo, and women’s judo. They finished
second in women’s basketball and women’s taekwondo and
third in women’s chess, women’s swimming and women’s
table tennis.
Far
Eastern University ran third with 119. The Tamaraws
actually won the most number of championships in the
first semester with five (men’s taekwondo, men’s chess,
women’s table tennis, men’s beach volleyball, women’s
beach volleyball). But FEU placed either second (men’s
table tennis) or third (women’s taekwondo) twice and did
not participate in four events (men’s swimming, women’s
swimming, men’s judo and women’s judo).
De La
Salle took the fourth spot with 117 points with only the
men’s basketball as its only crown in the first
semester. The Green Archers did have second-place
finishes in men’s chess, women’s chess and women’s judo
and third in men’s swimming and men’s judo.
Ateneo
was fifth spot with 107 points with a title in women’s
basketball and second-place finishes in women’s swimming
and women’s beach volleyball and third in men’s
basketball and men’s taekwondo.
University of the East was the sixth placer so far with
82 points with a first runner-up trophy in men’s
basketball and second runner-up finishes in men’s chess
and men’s table tennis.
Adamson
placed seventh after a 32-point output after its men’s
and women’s beach volleyball squads finished second and
third place, respectively.
National
University
got the last spot with 31 points with a fifth-place
finish in women’s beach volleyball as its brightest
performance so far. |
