  • Art doubts straw voting;
    Cojuangco announces his ticket

    By Reuben Terrado
    Reporter

    PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) presidential candidate Art Macapagal disagrees with the proposal of incumbent POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco to hold a straw vote in the coming POC elections.

    Macapagal, in a statement, said rules in the elections, just like in sporting competitions, should be followed.

    “Like sports, elections have rules, too,” Macapagal said. “We have to set the example by following rules, not by improvising new ones along the way to competition day.”

    Cojuangco suggested for a straw vote because of what he deemed as an imminent disunity among sports officials after the elections.

    “It is my firm belief that my fellow sports leaders will see the virtue of a straw vote because, after all, everyone in the POC is more concerned with the state of Philippine sports than in an exercise that, while essential, also threatens our valued unity and solidarity,” Cojuangco said.

    But Macapagal believes that with the right attitude among the sports leaders, there will be no disunity among sports officials in the POC.

    “Election, like sports, is a competition. As long as we don’t treat our adversaries as enemies, we should not worry about disunity in the Olympic family,” Macapagal said.

    Cojuangco announces his ticket

    A DAY after proposing a straw vote for the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) elections, POC president Jose ”Peping” Cojuangco, who is seeking a secone term, announced his ticket that he said would ensure him at least 20 votes.

    Heading the list are Manny Lopez of boxing (first vice president), Mario Tanchangco of sepak takraw (second vice president), Julian Camacho of wushu (treasurer), Tony Tamayo of soft tennis (assistant treasurer) and Sultan Jamalul Kiram of pencak silat (auditor).

    The board members are Bert Lina of cycling, Dave Carter of judo, Dr. Leonora Brawner of archery and Dr. Sim Chi Tat of canoe-kayak.

    Others include Steve Hontiveros of bowling (secretary-general), Buddy Andrada of tennis (deputy secretary-general), Mark Joseph of swimming (deputy secretary-general), Joey Romasanta of karatedo (public-relations committee chairman), Reynaldo Pineda of lawn bowls (membership committee chairman), Sonny Lim of bodybuilding (membership committee cochairman), Cesar Binag of table tennis (uniform services relations), Noli Eala of basketball (marketing), Go Teng Kok of athletics (sport and rules committee) and Pedro Mendoza of volleyball (technical committee chairman).

    But Cojuangco explained that he will still talk to some of the officials to formally join the ticket.

    Marami rito, hindi ko pa nakakausap. Pero ako ay umaasa na nakita nila iyong four years ko, iyung pagkatao ko at iyung mga ginawa ko,” Cojuangco said in the Usapang POC radio program on dzSR Sports Radio.

    Cojuangco described his ticket as a “working group.”

    Kumuha tayo ng mga tao na handang mag-trabaho kapag na-elect,” said Cojuangco.
