WHEN
appliance companies unveil their latest products to the
media, they’re usually dry, glorified versions of
show-and-tell that, by audio-visual slide 12 or 13,
would have guests zoning off, fiddling with their
phones, or grabbing another drink. When it was LG
Electronics’ turn recently, it broke away from the pack
with its series of lifestyle showcases, presented by
actors and actresses who welcomed intimate groups of
guests like visitors to their homes. Not only did it
upped the aspirational quotient—keeping up with the
Joneses and all that—it also underscored the company’s
intent to redefine the way we live through its portfolio
of products that is remarkably extensive. Filipinos, get
ready for another kind of Korean invasion.
Dubbed
the “techorator,” the onslaught of gadgets and
appliances combines advanced technology with aesthetic
appeal. “By coming up with new premium products that
already integrate both stylish design and smart
technology, we at LG see ourselves as a ‘techorator’ who
can help customers enjoy the premium lifestyle
experience,” said Jeff Hong, president and chief
executive officer. The hybrid of beauty and brains is
reflected in everything from microwave ovens to mobile
phones to multimedia entertainment systems.

THE Scarlet full-on front
and sideways.
Don’t
expect the ordinary when you open one of their newest
microwave ovens. The premium line Wavedom is designed
with a rounded, instead of rectangular, cooking area
that offers 60 percent more usable space. It also speeds
up cooking time by 30 percent.
With its
titanium-silver doors and hidden door hinges, the
Side-by-Side refrigerator adds a sleek, innovative touch
to any kitchen. Foods are kept within an optimum level
of moisture through the Moist Balance Crisper. Its
minibar is accessed smoothly with the push of an elbow,
and the temperatures are controlled with a touch of the
buttons on the external digital control panel. To keep
curious tots from accidents, the refrigerator is fitted
with a digital child-lock, just like LG’s washing
machines.
Touted
to take a huge load off on laundry days, the
washer-and-dryer units are built with a steam washing
feature that removes dirt, allergens and wrinkles, using
21-percent less energy and water. Because washing
machines in any shade of white are about as exciting as
a pair of used socks, the company is boldly introducing
funkier hues like pink brown, emerald green and bahama
blue. Not feminine enough? Have a gander at their
selection of contemporary floral designs.
Even the
air-conditioner gets a major facelift. There’s no
unsightly AC to mar your interiors when the Art Cool can
be concealed behind your choice of painting or
photograph.
Domestic
divas will drool over the “state-of-the-art” vacuum
cleaner. The bag-less wonder is equipped with a
motorized dust compression system that gathers dusts and
packs them into cubes for easier cleanup.

THE Scarlet Multimedia Home
Theater System.
But the
pièce de résistance is the high-definition LCD TV, a
stunning vision of streamlined technology clad in a
glossy-black front and a fiery-red back. One of the
slimmest LCDs in the world, Scarlet includes an
intelligent sensor that continuously maximizes picture
quality according to ambient light conditions. A
generous 178-degree viewing angle, a 50,000 to 1 dynamic
contrast ratio for truer colors, an antidazzling feature
for eye care, and a Dolby Digital decoder will turn any
viewing experience into a cinematic moment. Almost. The
LCD, which comes in 47-, 42- and 32-inch models, also
boasts of invisible speakers tuned by the legendary
Golden Ear, Mark Levinson. A truly worthy follow-up act
from the company that “wowed the world with the
industry’s first 100-inch LCD and 120-inch Plasma TV
with built-in recorder.”
