    Show & Tell

She was focused on the show

THE recent verbal skirmishes among sexy stars in one of the usual disrobing events produced and organized by a men’s magazine got our attention. Well, they do this all the time anyway, the usual catfights that lead to instant publicity.

It was reported that ABS-CBN’s Rizza Santos snubbed GMA sexy stars Katrina Halili, LJ Reyes and Alyssa Alano, provoking Iwa Moto to confront the former Pinoy Big Brother contestant. At any rate, Santos is doing a movie with two of our country’s top comedians.

For a few days, the interviews done on Halili, Reyes and Alano showed how maldita Santos could be. Halili said that when she bumped into Santos in the comfort room at one point during the event, she said hi but the middling starlet appeared to have heard nothing. It was the same case with Reyes and Alano.

But in a recent interview posted on gmanews.tv, Santos said that she was too focused on whatever she was doing backstage, including the comfort room, to have noticed the three. She said she was a bit nervous and there was a problem with some of her clothes. In short, she was oblivious of what was happening around her.

In fact, Santos said, “I never met Alyssa, I never met LJ. I never got the chance to call any of them. I [was] trying to get my clothes on so ’yung isip ko nasa damit. If it happened that I looked at them in the way they misinterpreted, I’m very sorry for that, of course.”

Specifically for Halili, she said, “I’m very sorry about the situation, it was a fast turn of event. But I offer the hand of friendship. I’d love to meet you, I really would. I really enjoyed you in the movie Gigil.”

Santos added that she’s a fan of Halili and in fact bought a DVD of the said movie (presumably not pirated). Halili, in another interview, said she’s not angry at Santos. She advised Santos that next time, she should be more mindful of the people around her. “You’re in showbiz, so people naturally look at you,” said Halili.

Some close observers say that it’s just one of those publicity stunts. Santos did it not only to one member of a rival network but three. It’s a time-tested method to get mileage. Just pick a fight with a celebrity or anyone in the news, and you’ll get the attention you salivate for. True enough, if you chance upon any article about Santos’s snubbing incident, it would end with a promotion on the said movie. And we won’t fall into the trap. We might get into “double trouble.”

She still doesn’t know Lino Brocka

THIS well-publicized boo-boo regarding Rhian Ramos’s ignorance of Lino Brocka happened almost more than a week ago, during the annual awards night hosted by the Entertainment Press Society (Enpress) where Ramos was to present the Lino Brocka Award together with young actor JC de Vera.

Doing an adlib, de Vera asked Ramos if she knew Brocka. Since it was not part of the script, Ramos reportedly fumbled her answer and laughed it off, saying something like, “Let’s stick to the script.”

One of the artistas who became quite vocal about the incident was much-awarded Cherry Pie Picache, who had worked with the late, great film director. In several interviews, she said that she felt offended young actresses like Ramos seemed to be clueless about the great director. She indirectly advised Ramos that since she’s part of show business, it’s her duty to know its history. Or, at least, know the story behind the award she is presenting.

Ramos apologized to Picache in another interview and explained that she was just nervous that time and didn’t clearly hear de Vera’s question. For someone who is always in front of the camera, it’s quite unusual to be nervous in front of so many people. She also said that she knew who Brocka was but couldn’t elaborate. She might not have seen any film by the master.

This must be a lesson to all young actors. It’s not all YouTube, Friendster, Facebook, Multiply, SMS, MTV, MYX, PSP and the latest on Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan that matter.

At the very least, they should make an effort to study film history. Not necessarily in school. Watch the classics—Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Mike de Leon, Eddie Romero, among others—and for sure, they’ll realize why the state of the Philippine film industry is the one they’re experiencing now. Perhaps they would even wish that they had been working the showbiz scene in that era.

    Update on the morning news

Now on its third week, our reliable sources say that the wedding of the mother of Dizzy Boy and this young musician won’t be pushing through. After much pressure from her eldest daughter—one of the four she had with another man; the young thing supposedly threatened to leave the household if those wedding bells so much as tinkled—along with some concerned individuals around her, she decided to cancel it.

It was a last-minute decision so all the bookings—the church, the venue for reception—were hastily canceled, and all the clothes fitted for the big day and everything else have been banished to storage somewhere.

Of course, ultimately, the hassles of cancellation might seem pithy compared with the possible headache/heartache of having a third husband, someone younger and still exploring what real life is outside his real mother’s womb.

More on Christian Bale’s ‘family feud’

THE British press is spinning like a top: Not only is The Dark Knight (with an English director and a Welsh star) making history at the box office, now it has two tawdry off-the-screen subplots. Heath Ledger’s overdose death in January would seem to have very little to do with Christian Bale’s recent family feuding, but not according to the Daily Mail Online.

    Fermentations:

    Wrestling with Riesling

FIRST, there is the bottle, long and tapered unlike the usual wine bottle with “shoulders.” Then there is the low alcohol level with some examples just batting at 7 percent, giving the impression that the wine is wimpy and bland.  And then, because the wines are virtually oak-free, they are deemed “unfashionable,” swimming against the current tide of rich, buttery whites that have had time in new barrels. Though still misunderstood and bypassed in favor of the wines made with the more familiar Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling is considered the noblest of all white-wine grapes. Here is why.

Learning Curve: An evening with Mega Mom

I’VE always been, unabashedly, a Sharon Cuneta fan and meeting her was such a thrill. I mean, I grew up with her—through her songs (from the time she first appeared as a 12-year-old singing “Mr. DJ”) and her movies (from her lovable cheesy Viva Films stuff with Gabby Concepcion to her more mature roles), and through her life’s many phases. And now, through her real-life role as midlifing mom to three beautiful daughters, her all-too-real struggles with her weight, her work-life balance, and her continuing efforts to improve herself as a person and as an actress. Did I mention that, being almost the same age, I also went through the same hairstyles and dress sense as she did?

    Tea, the British Way

ALEXANDER PUSHKIN found “ecstasy” in a glass full of tea. Chinese sage T’ien Yiheng drunk the brew to “forget the din of the world.” And Queen Victoria demanded hers be served, along with a copy of Times, the moment she ascended to her throne. In the days of yore, tea was the drink of nobility, philosophers and luminaries of the literary world. Since its discovery in China 5,000 years ago, it has built empires, smoothed diplomatic relations, and fueled the obsession of more than a few nations. Perhaps no other beverage is as steeped in historical, spiritual and ceremonial significance as tea. And now more than ever, it is embraced by young and old alike for its many health benefits.
