GCAP sponsors U.P. play on poverty

THE Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) Philippines is sponsoring the presentation of Hinabing Pakpak ng Ating mga Anak, the centennial offering of Dulaang UP on July 26, this Saturday.

Written and directed by Anton Juan Jr. the play tackles how the cycle of poverty and abuse shatters the hopes and dreams of children. Taking off largely from the texts by the late Rene Villanueva, a renowned writer of children’s stories and to whose memory the production is dedicated, the play fuses indigenous chants and rituals with modern dance to present this searing elegy.

GCAP, which has the urban poor as its constituency, has devised a way through which the subjects of the play will be able to watch the performances.

For every P500, a patron will be entitled to two tickets. One will be for the buyer’s use, the other one goes to an urban-poor GCAP member.

“We believe the poor has as much right to experience art, especially one that is written and staged so they will have a better grasp of the situation they are in,” said Joel Saracho, GCAP Philippines national coordinator.

A small merienda will be held in the lobby after the performance. It will be a chance for the patron to meet the GCAP members and appreciate the group’s antipoverty advocacy.

The sponsored performance will be at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman. Curtain rises at 3 pm. The production runs until August 10.

    For performance schedules: (632) 981-8500, locals 2449 or 2451, or visit ww.upd.edu.ph/~dup.

Less than two hours away and you are a foreigner in a land that looks like your own hometown but is really different after all.

A new strategy in dealing with alcoholism

WHEN it comes to treatment, the experts think alcoholism needs to catch up to depression. Three decades ago, long before the dawn of the Prozac Era, depression was a disease rarely treated in its mild form, reluctantly treated with drugs and usually treated by experts only. Today signs of depression are actively sought, drugs are prescribed early and often, and most cases are handled by nonpsychiatrists.
