    This Heart of Steel

    By Totel V. de Jesus

WITH the start of Codename:Asero, GMA’s new offering on prime-time TV, come Monday, everybody’s just but happy for the return of Heart Evangelista. This time, she’s daring enough to bare some skin. Snippets of her belly-dancing scene, which have been shown as appetizer of things to come some weeks ago, should be familiar to millions of viewers by now.

But there’s more to fat-free gyrations, because a lot of acting is involved in this action-packed sci-fi love story. In Codename: Asero, Heart proves that she’s back in the ball game. Opposite Richard Gutierrez, she is Emily San Juan, an overseas Filipino worker in Dubai who steels...er, steals his heart. For one, she can’t recall how many kissing scenes they have already had—with more to come.

NO more Echo from the past, Heart Evangelista returns on prime-time TV as a revitalized Kapuso, starring opposite Richard Gutierrez in Codename: Asero.

Wednesday, we were able to corner Heart at the press launch of what is described as “the grandest and first-ever sci-fi romantic movie on prime-time television.” The question on how she moved on from a devastating breakup kept on popping up in the interview. She begged not to be asked but we can’t help but be persistent.  Veteran showbiz writers were amazed on how fast she has recovered from such an “Echological” nightmare. Indeed, there’s no more Echo from the past.

This lady has a heart made stronger by an experience that we hope our daughter won’t ever encounter. But now Heart has a heart of steel. A heart of asero.

We’ve heard that you live alone in your own place?

Yes, because even before I became independent, my siblings and I have been given separate places to live ever since. Once in a while, I ask them to sleep over but, more or less, I live on my own.  Once in a while, I also ask my mom to sleep over.

Did he (former boyfriend Jericho Rosales) ever try contacting you?

    No, I changed my number.

How does GMA shield you from all the intrigues?

They’re very supportive. I know there’s this thinking that your personal life can’t be talked about too much. But they don’t pay so much attention to it. What’s important is, I’m working again, I’m doing all these things. I’m concentrating with my work. And I really want to move on with my work.

    You’ve moved on totally?

    Yes.

    Did you cry?

    No, I didn’t cry. I never cried.

Not a tear? What do you mean?

You know when you give your 100 percent (into a relationship), in the end you have no regrets. So it was easier for me to move on.

So there’s really no chance of getting back together?

    No. It’s done. It’s period.

How about the rumor regarding Dennis Trillo?

That may crush s’ya sa akin? Oo nga, eh. Nahihiya nga  s’ya sa akin. Pero nagha-hi na s’ya ngayon. Sabi ko, oh kaya pala ’di mo ko pinapansin dati. (Like Heart, Dennis Trillo started his showbiz career on the ABS-CBN playground.)

How about your leading man, Richard Gutierrez?

He’s a real gentleman, and I am thankful that he’s there for me. He gave me advice while we were in Dubai. He is very professional. He never took advantage of me. I know it’s showbiz but we’re really just friends.

    Do you entertain suitors?

You know, I’m not ready for a relationship. But I really want to feel that I deserve to be happy. If I meet somebody who I can have a good conversation with, that’s OK.

    You’re open to dating?

Dating? Is that how you call it? But for me, it’s more of going out. Getting to know other people. Seeing the world again.

There was an interview with Carmen Soo (the Malaysian actress with whom Jericho allegedly has an affair while he and Heart were still a couple) and she denied any involvement with Echo. Any comment?

I really don’t care anymore. It’s done. It’s not that I don’t want to talk about it. It’s just...tapos na. I’ve moved on.

It seems you recover very fast. How did you do that?

You gain wisdom and you build character from everything you go through in life. I’m glad I have people who really love and support me. They’re my sisters, my mom, my dad. Yeah, my family.

Is there really no chance of you and Echo getting back together? In many interviews, Echo kept on mentioning how sad he is now.

I don’t know. Everybody has to accept the way life is. It’s not like ginusto ko ’to.

Are your fans angry at Echo?

There’s no need to be angry anymore. So I always encourage them not to be angry at anyone. That’s just the way life is.

After the break up, you look stronger. You look serious.

It’s not the breakup alone. We have to consider everything that I’ve gone through as a person, not just about that. It’s about my work. My family. With showbiz. Everything. It’s all of those that develop your character. Not just one person.

There’s always a chance that you and Jericho might bump into each other. It’s a small world after all. What are you going to do? Can you handle that?

I have nothing against that but I’m...there’s no need to. If we bump into each other? Well, there’s always trafficking (laughter).

Of course, there will be someone who’ll inform you that Echo is around, like an advance party, right?

    Yeah. I don’t like conflicts.

Do you miss someone from the other network? Or do you miss the other network?

Well, I miss them all. I practically grew up there. But like what I said, life can’t wait....Sunsilk. (Laughs; Heart is one of the featured celebrities in the hair-care brand’s ongoing “Life Can’t Wait” campaign.) It’s life. You just keep moving on, doing new things, meeting new people. So,  ganun talaga. Parang kumbaga iniwan mo y’ung grade school, high school, pumunta ka sa college. Pero nami-miss ko lahat dun. Ultimo kahit ’yung Starbucks or Cibo [It’s like that. It’s like leaving grade school and high school and then you go to college. But I miss everything there, even the Starbucks or Cibo restaurant].

So, it’s like you can’t go to ABS-CBN? Even just to say hi?

Hindi naman siguro. Wala naman sinabing hindi pwede ’yung ganun. It’s more out of respect sa GMA. Parang kumbaga may event ang MYX, pumunta ka sa event ng MTV [It’s not like that. There’s no such verbal warning to not do this or that. It’s out of respect to GMA. It’s like if there’s an event hosted by MYX, I go to MTV].

So how is it with GMA?

Why do you avoid talking about Carmen Soo?

’Cause she’s not part of my life. And there’s no need to talk. It’s done, It’s over. Next topic.

What if Dennis courts you? Trillo ha, not Padilla.

I’m not ready yet. I just want to be friends with everybody.

How does your dad call you?

    Heart. Hearty.

How many hours of sleep do you get?

It depends. Sometimes eight, sometimes three.

We’re amazed by how sexy you are. How did you do that?

I work out every day. Even if I have a taping at 7 am, I wake up at 5 am just for my exercise. And it’s your first time to see me like this, kasi nga always pa-sweet ang roles ko or drama. But I’ve always been like this. (Giggles)

    Do you still dream?

    Yeah, a lot. Sa car.

    What do you dream about?

About achieving my dreams and goals in life. And meeting Mr. Right...pero matagal pa ’yun. Enjoy ko muna buhay ko.

***Codename: Asero starts airing on July 14 but there will be a special feature on how the new series was filmed, to be shown on Sunday night (July 13), after Fullhouse, titled Codename:Asero—The Dubai-Manila Journey.

NO, I’m not suggesting Eva Mendes can’t conquer her substance-abuse problems. What really worries me is how she will ever possibly stay sober, having to deal with some of the most clueless people on the planet: the pack of celebrity journalists who seem to be an inescapable part of the recovery program for troubled starlets.
