A
RECORD-BREAKING performance by Raoul Miranda, Chester
King and Frederick Ong propelled the Philippines to the
men’s trios gold medal in the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling
Championships at the Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong
Wednesday.
Miranda,
King and Ong scored 4,193 pinfalls and smashed three
Asian records.
The
Filipinos won by a wide margin—276 ahead of the
Malaysian squad of Aaron King, Mohd Nur Aiman and Adrian
Ang (3,917). The total score smashed the previous Asian
mark of 3,932 set by Japan in 2002.
Eugene
Low, Jason Nathan and Shaun Ng of Singapore had a 3,898
for the bronze medal.
The RP
trio also made records for the most pinfalls in a
three-game series with 2,197 during the second block,
breaking the old mark held by South Korea (2,009) in
2002, and the most pinfalls in a single game with 780 in
the fifth game. Malaysia previously held the record
which it established in 2000.
King
scored the most among the trio with 1,535. Miranda had
1,412 and Ong 1,246 for the team supported by Ebonite,
Philippine Airlines and the Philippine Sports
Commission.
“I’ve
never bowled this well,” said the 33-year-old King.
The
Filipinos trailed by one in the first block under short
oil conditions, but they came back big during the second
block where the lanes were under long oil, the team’s
preferred conditions.
“Chester
is very happy with the way he played. He considers the
day the most memorable moment of his career. And we are
happy to be there for him,” said national coach Nico
Valderrama in an e-mail to the BusinessMirror.
With his
performance, King moved from 17th to first place in the
All-Events standings with 4,886 pinfalls. Miranda, who
had earlier won the bronze medal in the men’s individual
events, is 127 behind King for second place.
This
early, Valderrama said the team’s performance be a good
buildup for the World Men’s Championship in Bangkok in
August.
“It’s
going to be a great boost for the team to head to
Bangkok with an impressive performance here,” Valderrama
added. |
