RAOUL
MIRANDA settled for a bronze medal in the men’s singles
event of the 2008 Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships
Saturday night at the Hong Kong Bowling Center in Hong
Kong.
Miranda
posted 1,437 pinfalls in six games to finish behind Choi
Ki-Bong of South Korea and Alex Liew of Malaysia. He had
his event-high 258 in the second game after a 222. It
was followed by a 254, 230, 247 and 235.
Choi won
with 1,490, while Liew bagged silver with 1,454.
“The
opponents were playing so great that at least eight
players had a shot at a gold medal going to the last
game,” said national coach Nico Valderrama in an e-mail
to the BusinessMirror.
Miranda’s bronze was the first medal for the country
since the three gold, one silver and two bronze medals
won in the 2002 championships, also held in Hong Kong.
The team is supported by Ebonite, Philippine Airlines
and the Philippine Sports Commission.
Frederick Ong tallied 1,354 to place 14th, while Chester
King had 1,334 to be at 17th spot. Vladimir Tuazon
placed 30th, Benshir Layoso 51st and Tyrone Ongpauco
68th.
In
women’s singles, Alexis Sy took the 15th spot after a
1,297—the best by the Filipinas in the tournament
dominated by Koreans.
Liza del
Rosario checked in at 19 the following a 1,280, Krizziah
Tabora 23rd, Dyan Coronacion 32nd, Elaine Ongpauco 38th
and Kimberly Lao 52nd.
Hwang
Sun-Ok (1,497), Choi Jin-A (1,494) and Jeon Eun-Hee
(1,479) made it a 1-2-3 finish for South Korea in the
women’s singles event.
Still to
come for the RP bowlers are the doubles, trios, team of
five and masters in the men’s and women’s division of
the event that will wrap up on July 12. |
