THE Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) has been chosen as one of the recipients of the 4th Corporate Governance Asia Recognition Awards 2008 in Hong Kong.

The award was given by Corporate Governance Asia, or CGA, to firms that “demonstrated excellence in corporate governance with Asian values and spirit” during the past year, the bank said in a statement.

“The bank constantly strives to adhere to the principles of good governance. Its strong business growth, profitability and leadership are reflections of this commitment,” said Metrobank chairman and Corporate Governance Committee chairman Antonio Abacan Jr.

This is the second year in a row that Metrobank has been recognized for excellence in corporate governance.

In 2007 Metrobank was given an honorable mention in The Asset Award for Best in Corporate Governance in the Philippines. Metrobank was honored for its “efforts to promote a corporate culture that is transparent, investor-friendly and is mindful of the rights of minority shareholders.”

Metrobank is the Philippines’ largest bank, with consolidated assets of P677.96 billion.
