    Another round of birthday cheers

AH, to be young and free....

These celebrities I talked to recently celebrated their birthdays and they all agreed to not only celebrate the day they were born but also to celebrate life in general. The result? They are all very well-rounded and intelligent individuals whom I had fun talking to.

Let’s meet them one by one....

    Victor Basa

COVERBOY Victor Basa is one of the most in-demand actors today. Barely a year in showbiz, we have seen this model-actor in several TV guestings. A certified hunk, Basa is the apple of the eyes of many leading ladies on TV today. After his teamup with Toni Gonzaga in Crazy for U, he now plays Stick in Abt Ur Luv. A different Basa is regularly seen in Primetime Bida’s soap opera Walang Kapalit, where he plays Miguel, a probinsyano in love with Eda Nolan. Basa is also doing hosting jobs for MTV and Wazzup Wazzup. This Penshoppe endorser recently won in Q Channel 11’s Stars on Ice competition.

    Valeen Montenegro

FORMER print and commercial model-turned-actress Valeen Montenegro is one of the most visible Star Magic artists today. Launched as part of Star Circle Batch 13, she has appeared in shows like Your Song, Lovespell, Wowowee, Homeboy and ASAP.  Her chemistry with Pinoy Big Brother teen housemate Aldred Gatchalian was first noticed when they did the music video of the latter’s “Mahiwagang Pag-ibig.”  They became part of Crazy for You. She is also part of the recently launched soap Ysabella, where she plays the daughter of Coney Reyes.

    Katrina “Hopia” Legaspi

Katrina Legaspi, a.k.a. Hopia, is one of my favorite child stars who is very good at impersonating personalities like Kris Aquino. She caught the attention of Goin’ Bulilit director Bobot Mortiz and was chosen to be part of the regular cast. Hopia considers acting her passion, be it in comedy or drama. She was first seen in Hiram as the young Kris Aquino, and as Sam Milby’s niece in the movie Close to You. Hopia is also known as a belter and she displays it in her guestings in ASAP ’07 and Wowowee. At present, she is doing an independent digifilm. I hope to see this young girl blossom some more.

    Aldred Gatchalian

Aldred Gatchalian has gone a long way since he became one of the PBB teen housemates. He was very fortunate to be launched as a recording artist via Lovespell’s theme song. He also became part of the group Trio (with Aaron Agassi and Sam Concepcion) in ASAP.  He now plays a law student activist in Ysabella. Aldred is the endorser of Gatsby Hairwax and RRJ and RDL Facial Cleanser. He admits that it’s hard to juggle time between his career and his studies but he is positive that he can succeed in both. He is a freshman student at the University of the Philippines-Diliman taking up Associate Arts.

    Arno Morales

Arno Morales was introduced in Star Magic 15. This quiet teen was chosen to be the “third party” in the Lauren Young and AJ Perez loveteam. He may look serious onscreen but this “crush ng bayan”-in-the-making is actually a funny guy who knows how to make people laugh through his antics. He looks forward to be working in a comedy show in the near future.

Good luck everyone and happy birthday!

Mandy Moore is all grown up

WHEN Mandy Moore steps out of her black Prius and bounds into a tiny speck of a restaurant in Los Feliz, not a hipster on the block flinches. Sure, her toffee bangs are partially covering her eyes—but you’d expect someone might make a correlation between the girl on the street and the enormous photo of her plastered on a giant billboard just a few yards away, towering over Vermont Avenue.

Tina Brown offers this observation about celebrities and their larger-than-life mien: “I have a theory that you physically change by being looked at.” In fact, she continued, one’s head appears to grow in proportion to one’s body. “Hillary [Rodham Clinton’s]...is like something on a Macy’s carnival float. Angelina Jolie’s head—I’m sorry, it’s vast.”
