AT times like these when fuel prices mean serious adjustments and family budget cuts, it seems Isuzu knows how to make the prevailing situation feel lighter, especially on the pocket.

At the Isuzu Family Challenge, which was launched on June 7 at the Isuzu Inteco Quezon Avenue show room, Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC) engaged participating Crosswind, Sportivo, D-Max and Alterra owners in a campaign to spread the message that fuel-efficiency awareness is a family affair that need not be a stressful deal and remind the public what weekends are really made for.

13 teams consisting of a driver and a navigator drove from Shell Quezon Avenue to a predetermined, 175-kilometer destination—the Montemar Beach Club in Bataan—under normal, mixed driving conditions in Saturday traffic.

ANIsuzu Alterra plies the SCTEx stretch to Subic at the kick-off drive of the Family Challenge.

The challenge was more of a fuel economy contest with teams setting the lowest kilometer-per-liter run taking home the trophies and prizes. Participating Isuzu vehicles were required to be in stock condition with an odometer reading not exceeding 100,000 kilometers. During the run, each vehicle’s aircon unit also had to be switched on at the minimum setting.

The kick-off event results were promising. Calculated fuel consumptions ranged from 17 to 24 kilometers. Ricardo and Nadine Flaviano took home the winning trophy as they yielded the highest mileage of 24.31 kilometers per liter in a Crosswind XL. “We drove with all our baggage inside the vehicle,” said Ricardo. “The spare tire was even clutched below the chassis. I personally wanted to know exactly how my vehicle sips diesel.  This challenge gave me satisfying numbers,” Flaviano added.

Aside from the fuel economy challenge, families also had a chance to enjoy fun under the sun, such as recreational activities hosted especially for the participants.

“This event aims to emphasize Isuzu engine superiority and pocket-friendly diesel consumption,” said IPC president Keiji Takeda. “It doesn’t matter who the vehicle owners is or what brand of vehicle one drives. The fuel-efficiency issue is for everyone, especially motorists with families. Fortunately, Isuzu vehicles are not just fuel-efficient. They are comfortable riders as well.”

Subsequent editions of the Isuzu Family Challenge, which is open to all Crosswind, Sportivo, D-Max, and Alterra owners, is set for the following dates and venues: June 21—Alabang and Pasig; June 28—Isuzu San Pablo; July 5—Isuzu Gencars Makati; July 26—Isuzu Cavite; August 2—Isuzu Isabela; August 9—Isuzu Cabanatuan; August 16—Isuzu Bulacan; September 6—Isuzu Pampanga; September 13—Isuzu Pangasinan; September 20—Isuzu Batangas; October 11—Isuzu Mandaue; October 18)—Isuzu Davao; October 25—Isuzu Iloilo; November 8—Isuzu Bacolod; and November 15—Isuzu Cagayan De Oro.
