Renowned leadership expert John Maxwell shared more secrets of successful leadership during a one-on-one interview with the BusinessMirror prior to “The John Maxwell Leadership Summit” held recently at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City.

The BusinessMirror partnered with this prestigious event as both leaders in their own categories follow the positioning power of “Look before you lead”—an all-important reminder that leadership expert Maxwell wrote in his book Leadership 101. Because leadership entails heading toward a particular direction and rallying people and resources with you on your journey, as a leader, you must first know where you’re headed before you start moving.

Many leaders have tried to paint a vision for themselves and others, only to realize later on that the vision wasn’t compelling or grounded enough. Maxwell shared four characteristics of visions that work: The vision must start from within; Vision draws on the leader’s personal history; Vision meets others’ needs; and Vision helps you gather resources.

To discover your vision, learn to pause, look within and without, and, as Maxwell pointed out, “focus on listening.” He identified four “voices” that all leaders must pay attention to: The inner voice, the unhappy voice, the successful voice and the higher voice. Ultimately, a leader must be willing to take risks for the vision to become real, and that means sacrificing and going beyond comfort zones to do what is right.
