IN accordance with the 110th Independence Day celebration today, the north and southbound lanes of Roxas Boulevard in Manila from Katigbak to T.M. Kalaw Streets will be closed at exactly 6 a.m.

Vehicles going north on Roxas Blvd shall turn right on T.M. Kalaw and turn left on Ma. Orosa.

Those going southward coming from Delpan Bridge-Pier Zone shall turn left on P. Burgos and turn right on Ma. Orosa.

Meanwhile, all vehicles coming from the McArthur, Jones and Quezon Bridges and going to the southbound lane of Roxas Boulevard from P. Burgos shall take Round Table and Ma. Orosa to the point of destination.

This year’s Independence Day program will feature interesting cultural, arts and trade shows, and government services for free.

More than 100 booths are set up from June 9 to 12 at the San Lorenzo Ruiz Plaza at the Rizal Park in Manila, the Sentro K:3 area, this year’s Independence Day centerpiece.

The President will deliver her Independence Day message at Sentro K3 area.

Vice President Noli de Castro will lead the flag- raising and wreath-laying rites at the E. Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite. There will be a caravan to the resettlement site in Trece Martires for the Bigasan ng Bayan, bagsakan, commodities, medical mission and the Gawad Kalinga Building programs.

People outside Metro Manila will witness similar programs because the activities will be replicated in other regions.

Sentro K:3 will showcase everything that is best about the Filipino—services, sports activities, exhibits, sales, fairs, songs, art works, and other cultural fare, medical assistance, cultural and historical tours, extension of government services and more, said Department of Tourism (DOT) director Ting de los Reyes.

It features Ang Galing Natin booths with exhibits and lectures and audiovisual shows. The Bayan Ko, Lapit sa Puso Ko will have government agencies provide projects in terms of jobs, housing, health cards, micro finance loans, and scholarships, while The Lakad-Aral sa Liwasan will offer park tours to visitors, and the One Town, One Product will showcase the best of Philippine products from all regions of the country.

There will also be book sales at discounted prices, and an agri-aqua fair and exhibit featuring demonstrations on meat and fruit processing.

In the afternoon, teams from all over the country will show off their skills in artistic showmanship, alignment and synchronized movements in the drum and bugle exhibition. The Philippine Military Academy will perform a Silent Drill Exhibition.

All these will be capped by a special fireworks display and the simultaneous blowing of fog horns, church bells, fire trucks and sirens.

Cabinet secretaries have been tasked to lead propoor programs with specific themes and locations in different sites in all the regions.

Around 28 Cabinet secretaries will bring government services, distribute land titles, provide conditional cash-transfer cards, textbooks and training manuals, as well as health cards and food-security services.

President Arroyo has tasked the Cabinet to assist in the simultaneous flag-raising and wreath- laying activities nationwide that will, at the same time, bring antipoverty services to the people.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus will assist her as the national chairman of this year’s event.

In Metro Manila, Presidential Management Staff Secretary Cerge Remonde will lead a forum featuring successful beneficiaries of micro enterprise and Go Negosyo entrepreneurs and mentors. The event will be capped with the awarding of microfinance loans to borrowers and give out scholarships to seminars on entrepreneurship.

Metro Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando will lead in the cleaning of esteros, inauguration of a “condotel” and head the feeding program in Divisoria after the flag-raising rites in Rizal Park.

At the Mausoleo de los Veteranos in the North Cemetery, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro will inaugurate the new hardware of the DND as part of the AFP’s modernization program. He will also lead in the road clearing and dredging at the Smokey Mountain in Tondo.

From Pugad Lawin in Quezon City, Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral will proceed to Payatas where she will distribute conditional cash transfer funds to family-beneficiaries, lead a supplemental feeding for children, and conduct a brain quiz for out-of-school youths.

Lapus will launch educational programs and textbook shipment. He will also inspect a computer laboratory in Sta. Mesa in response to the need of the youth and students for their academic/technical education.
