DAVAO CITY—A
business chamber executive here said member companies
have “scrimped, saved and recycled” to stay afloat amid
the hard times, and said he was “appealing to everybody
to do the same.”
“Everybody in the chamber is doing a lot of things to be
in the business, and the primary objective is for them
to continue doing business,” said Conrado Hernaez,
executive director of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce
and Industry (DCCCI).
Hernaez
told a business forum at the MediSpa Clinic at SM City
here Tuesday that “businesses have to save and scrimp,
and recycle materials including paper.”
He also
said that plans were put on hold for expansion or
aggressive operation that were earlier decided during
the better days shortly before the price of oil and rice
spiked early this year.
“Business will always survive and we have to survive,”
he said.
But
unlike in other situations where there are winners and
losers, Hernaez said that “we are all losers here,
because many of us are earning fixed salaries.”
“Everybody, from business to consumers, compete for
whatever little money that we have,” he said.
He
expected the nonbasic household commodities to be
affected by the crisis “because people tend to buy the
basic goods first.”
“That’s
why I advise everybody to scrimp and save,” he said. |
