None of the boring stuff. Suzuki Philippines Inc. Friday launched the much-anticipated SX4, officially marking its entry to the country’s compact-sedan segment. The sporty SX4 sedan was created by the same team that won acclaim with the Swift hatchback. The new car has received rave reviews for its optimum driving performance and sleek styling. Unstoppable! Fuel, LPG prices go up

CONSUMERS must redo their budgets once again after oil companies Chevron Philippines Inc., Petron Corp., Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. and Total (Philippines) Corp. hiked gasoline, diesel and kerosene prices by P1.50 per liter over the weekend to reflect the continuous increase in world oil prices.

On Saturday, Total also increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by P1 per kilo or P11 for an 11-kilo tank.

Poor to need extra P2,269 a year on oil

Already struggling with weak purchasing power, poor families may have to work double time to find ways to meet their basic needs once the price of Dubai crude reaches $200 per barrel.

In a simulation done by the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda), the government projected that poor families belonging to the first- to the fifth-income decile may have to scrounge around for more funds to buy food and pay for basic services such as transportation.

JFC against Epira changes

FOREIGN businessmen are dissuading the government from yielding to pressures to amend the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (Epira), or Republic Act 9136, and also to initiate contract renegotiations with the independent power producers (IPPs).

In a letter to President Arroyo, the Joint Foreign Chambers of the Philippines (JFC) said such turnaround in major policies would turn off local and foreign investors and dampen their confidence.

Lopezes, allies ‘untouchable’ at Meralco

THE Lopez bloc remained “untouchable” in the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) after it won a round versus corporate regulator Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) after the appeals court ordered the temporary halt of investigations on the management’s alleged defiance of an order on proxy votes.

Napocor denies First Gas claims

GOVERNMENT-RUN National Power Corp. (Napocor) denied Friday allegations made by First Gas Power Corp. during an Energy Committee Hearing conducted by the House Committee on Energy on May 29.
