THE interlinked forms bring to mind cymbals flying against a clear blue sky.

    Nuyda’s Sensuality
    By Christian Espiritu

AN expedition to an art gallery endows a variety of feelings on the psyche and the mood of the viewer. If the featured artworks are suffused with gloominess and melancholy, the viewer ultimately finds himself suffused with a similar sense of blackness. If they are otherwise, the opposite effect is certain.

A homeowner searching for an art piece to lighten up a lifeless spot in the house will opt for the piece that will provide light and excitement. Yes, a piece that will bring with it some kind of brightness or an intangible movement of sort.

In alleviating our ennui one afternoon, I decided to visit and view the finished works and the works in progress at the studio-gallery of Justin Nuyda. Gladly, the artist welcomed us with open arms. After some exchange of pleasantries, I asked the friendly artist to allow us to take some snaps of his works.

JUSTIN NUYDA in a pensive moment.

What struck me about Nuyda’s pieces is the consistency of his style. Of course, that is not to suggest that he hasn’t or doesn’t evolve. Currently, Nuyda is still in the period which local art aficionados have decided to label as “mindscapes à la Nuyda.”

There are landscapes, seascapes and even skyscapes, but the rendered visions from Nuyda’s mind and sensibilities are entirely his own. Without a tinge of selfishness, he readily shares to people the technique that he has inimitably mastered. The method appears to be simple but I, who have had experience with brush, watercolor or paint, would swear by my missal that Nuyda’s mindscape is a kind of miracle only he can perform.

As a layman, I’m not going to venture into critiquing like those art critics who see what mortals like us cannot even hope to perceive. When I gaze into one Nuyda artwork, what I see is a gossamer swath of multihued clouds flying over the atmosphere. The aqua monochromes contrast masterfully with the orangey backdrop of clouds suggesting daybreak. Easily, an interior designer can use this coloration as a room’s color scheme.

Another energetic piece lying around his gallery is one rendered in copper hues set against an azure blue background. If it were hung inside one’s den, he is bound to hear the harmonious clanging of cymbals—without his sound systems making the slightest peep.

SENSUOUS figures that can trigger one’s imaginations.

One of the many attributes of Nuyda as an artist is his propensity for creating nudes and other objects of desire. There were quite a bit of naughty pieces in his gallery that would be so apropos for any master den. With a chubby grin on his bearded face, he readily disclosed the source of those most sensual artworks.

Justin Nuyda’s studio-gallery can be found at 94 Aguirre Avenue, BF Homes, Parañaque.
