    Businessmen say opposition-ruled
    Senate good for balance
    By Max de Leon

    Reporter

THE business community favors an opposition-led Senate, a result indicated by the trend in the canvassing, as this would perfect the balance in a Congress where the House of Representatives is controlled by the administration, industrialist Raul Concepcion said on Monday.

“The elections are over. The House will be controlled by congressmen allied with the administration, while the Senate will be controlled by the opposition. This will be good for the people and for business,” Concepcion said.

Based on his conversations with the leaders of different business groups, Concepcion said a well-balanced Congress is what the business community wants.

Also, the sense of business is that since the victory of the opposition in the Senate race is the people’s sovereign will, the result must now be accepted and respected, he added.

“Measures like the budget and taxes originate from the House. The Senate will refine them. Such balance of power, as desired by the citizenry, will work wonders for the benefit of the people and business,” he said.

Anyway, Concepcion said, the people chose well since many of the newly elected senators are well-educated, well-qualified and are known to be progressive as well as independent-minded.

The new senators have a good working knowledge of the issues linked with the problems of slow economic growth, poverty, social equity and the environment, said Concepcion. They also understand the urgency of economic reforms and the need to cope with globalization, he noted.

Based on the trends of the canvassing for the May 14 midterm polls, the opposition is poised to win seven to eight more slots in the Senate.

Concepcion believes the new breed of senators will be able to tackle urgent and important economic and other reform measures with intellectual integrity and objectivity.
