Palace says April 30 not a holiday; May 14 is

PRESIDENT Arroyo has issued Proclamation 1279 declaring Monday, May 14, a special public (nonworking) holiday nationwide to give the people a chance to exercise their right to vote during the national and local elections on that day.

In his weekly press conference in Ma-lacañang on Wednesday, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the President signed the proclamation on April 24.

Ermita also said that Malacañang decided not to declare April 30, which is sandwiched between Sunday and May 1, a public holiday, as a nonworking day because of concerns raised by the Department of Labor and Employment and the Department of Trade and Industry.

Labor Secretary Arturo Brion said earlier he had recommended that April 30 not be declared a holiday because it was “anti-labor” and “anti-business” as it hurt daily wage earners and reduced business productivity.
