  • Badminton titles go to La Salle, Santo Tomas

    By Reuben Terrado

DE LA SALLE and University of Santo Tomas (UST) emerged men’s and women’s champions of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 70 badminton tournament that ended over the weekend at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.

The Green Archers annexed the title via an 8-0 sweep of the eliminations, dethroning FEU in the process.

The Tigresses, who vastly improved from their fifth place finish in Season 69, also won the crown at the expense of last year’s winner FEU.

Kelvin Tim Ang was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Paul Jefferson Vibas of UST came away with the Rookie of the Year in the men’s division.

Rose Anne de la Cruz of UST captured the MVP plum in the women’s side and Reyme Thraitscka Des Calimlim of De La Salle was named Rookie of the Year.

UE came second in the men’s division followed by FEU, UST, UP, Ateneo and Adamson. In the women’s division, De La Salle placed second followed by FEU, UP, UE, Adamson, Ateneo and NU.

UST also swept the eliminations with a 7-0 win-loss card.

Defending champion UST, meanwhile, tries to stay alive against FEU at the start Wednesday of the Final Four of the women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Tigresses, who have to win twice in the semifinals to advance, have never beaten the Lady Tamaraws in two games in the elimination round and in the playoff for the twice-to-beat edge in the Final Four.

But UST coach August Santamaria is confident about his team’s chances in the 2 p.m. match.

Kaya pa naman naming manalo. Basta kalimutan lang nila ’yung nakaraan,” said Santamaria, whose wards face an FEU team that is aiming for its first title since 2002.

In the second game at 4 p.m., No. 1 Adamson guns for a finals seat against No. 4 Ateneo.

Powered by Rissa Laguilles, Angela Benting and Michelle Segodine, the Lady Falcons fought back from two sets down to beat the Lady Tamaraws in the playoff for the No. 1 spot.

The Lady Falcons have never won a women’s volleyball title in the UAAP.
