    UST, Adamson rally to wins

    University of Santo Tomas (UST) needed a seven-run fifth inning to overhaul an early deficit and bring down Ateneo, 18-9, yesterday in UAAP Season 69 baseball at the Rizal Memorial diamond.

    The Tigers trailed by six runs entering the bottom fifth, then exploded with Ace Baquiran’s run-scoring single, Al-Denn Lozada’s two-run single and a sacrifice fly by Marc Castillo to take an 8-7 lead.

    Baquiran added an RBI single in the sixth inning that practically sealed Santo Tomas’s fifth win in eight games.

    After an impressive first round of the eliminations, the Eagles have lost three straight to fall to 3-4 win-loss.

    Nico David’s RBI single for Ateneo closed the gap at 10-9, but UST unleashed a six-run bottom seventh highlighted by two-run singles from Castillo and Jerby Diego. The Tigers also scored twice in the eighth for the final count.

    Adamson also came from behind in the latter innings to subdue defending champion University of the Philippines, 6-3. It was the Falcons’ third straight win, which tied them with UP at second place on 4-3 records.

    The game turned in the eighth inning, when Adamson scored five times through Richard Siacor’s RBI single and Melvin Vispo’s two-run one-bagger. Marvin Malig also singled for two runs at the top eighth, as UP was blanked in the last six innings.

     

    FEU labors to beat Maroons

     FAR EASTERN University (FEU), the defending champion, had to labor in four sets Wednesday before subduing University of the Philippines (UP), the former titlist, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 17-15, and grab the No. 1 spot at the close of the eliminations of UAAP Season 69 men’s volleyball action at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan.

    The win shoved the Tamaraws to a twice-to-beat advantage against No. 4 National University in the semifinals set Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

    The Maroons, on the other hand, will have the same twice-to-beat edge being the No. 2 team also after the eliminations when they face the Tigers of Santo Tomas in the other semifinal encounter also Sunday.

    FEU also continued to lord over the women’s side when the Lady Tamaraws took the No. 1 spot entering the Final Four after beating UST, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-11, also Wednesday.

    The Lady Tamaraws take on University of the East (UE), the No. 4 team, in the semifinals, while the Tigresses tackle the Adamson Lady Falcons in the other pairing.

    Fencing in Season 69, ,meanwhile, gets going this weekend at the Blue Eagle Gym, while badminton will be played February 17 and 18 at a new venue, the Club 650 in Libis, Quezon City.
