‘Son of Pool’ challenges money-game king
    By Ian Brion
    Reporter

Yang Ching-shun is the most feared Taiwanese billiards player today, but Dennis Orcollo will be out to break his back.

Yang Ching-shun does not have the global stature of compatriots Wu Chia-ching or Fong Pang-chao, both former world champions, but he is nevertheless the most feared Taiwanese billiards player today.

Even Filipinos agree, what with a record that included victories against pool legends Efren “Bata” Reyes, Francisco “Django” Bustamante and reigning world champion Ronnie Alcano.

But Yang has a waterloo among Filipinos—Dennis Orcollo—who he has yet to meet, and beat for that matter.

Yang, the “Son of Pool,” is returning to the Philippines to meet its money-game king, Orcollo, in a race-to-60 match dubbed “The Golden Pool Classic: Dennis Orcollo vs. Yang Ching-shun, it’s all about the money… and more.”

The event is slated from April 20 to 22 tentatively at the Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City.

Besides the prestigious claim of being the money-game king of the world, Orcollo and Yang will also dispute the $10,000 purse staked in the contest organized by Bugsy Promotions and Rocketman Enterprises.

“Yang is really the best Taiwanese player today,” said Bugsy Promotions head Perry Mariano. “He may not be as popular as Fong and Wu, particularly to many of us Filipinos, but Yang is a very great player that almost everybody is afraid to face him, especially in a long one-on-one match like in money-game.” In last year’s World Championship, Yang bombed out of the Round-of-32 in last year’s Manila World Championship, but before that, he booted out former world No. 1 Bustamante, whom he beat for P150,000. Alcano also lost the same amount to the Taiwanese.

“Orcollo is the only top Filipino player who Yang has yet to meet—and beat. That’s why we arranged this match to know if that Taiwanese guy really has the Filipinos’ number,” said Rocketman head Ramon Tuason.
