    UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) continued its stranglehold of the top spot with an easy 25-19, 26-24, 25-19 over University of the Philippines (UP) Saturday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s volleyball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

    Reny John Balse, the team’s leading scorer, again connected with 16 points while James Pecana had 13 hits for the Tigers who stretched their unbeaten slate that now runs to eight games. The loss was the Fighting Maroons’ third in eight games that kept them in third place.

    Far Eastern University (FEU) upended Adamson, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, in another game. Leading scorer Edjet Mabbayad had 17 markers while Francisco de la Cruz had 15 for the Tamaraws, who improved to 7-1 for second place in the standings.

    University of the East (UE) beat De La Salle, 23-25, 27-25, 25-18, 25-23, to join Adamson in joint fourth with a 4-4 win-loss slate.

    National University (NU), on the other hand, finally broke into the winning column with a 25-17, 27-25, 25-16 win over Ateneo. The Bulldogs joined the Green Archers at the bottom of the standings with a 1-7 card behind Ateneo’s 2-6.

    Action resumes Saturday with FEU taking on Ateneo at 8 a.m., UP going up against De La Salle at 10 a.m., UE facing UST at noon and Adamson taking on NU at 2 p.m. at the Blue Eagle Gym.

    In high school volleyball, Ateneo took the early lead in the boys division while defending champion UE in its season debut in the girls side also during the weekend at the UE Gym.

    The Blue Eaglets crushed UP Integrated School (UPIS), 25-6, 25-8, 25-13, and the UST Tiger Cubs, 25-23, 25-19, 25-16 for a 2-0 card.

    Defending champion UE beat the Junior Maroons, 25-10, 25-3, 25-8, while De La Salle-Zobel beat UST, 28-26, 25-16, 27-25, also in the boys division.

    The Junior Red Skirts beat De La Salle, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15, while UST defeated UPIS, 25-12, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, in the girls’ contest.
