    New Year, New Resolutions

IT’S now the middle of the first month and as of last night, I continue to fulfill my new year’s resolution of losing weight.

I’m trying to cut down on my carbs and I just enrolled in Gold’s Gym. I try to work out every day by doing cardio and a little strength training. I also attend the group classes and, so far, I’ve taken Pilates and a class on street dancing.

But this morning, there was a whole box of Krispy Kreme donuts waiting on the dining table. It became my breakfast. And, mind you, I didn’t eat just one—I ate almost half the box. By the time I was midway through my last piece of donut, I was fairly certain that I’d committed the deadly sin of gluttony. “So much for my new year’s resolution,” I said aloud.

And that got me wondering about the celebrities I know and their New Year’s resolution. This is what I have gathered so far:

Mariel Rodriguez: To save money! And, yes, so far I’ve been scrimping on money and have been avoiding malls!

Maxene Magalona: Eat healthy and exercise. I have to admit that I haven’t done any exercising, though (giggles). But I plan to enroll in a gym soon!

JB Magsaysay: Less talk and more action. I just realized that I talk about my problems more than do something to solve them. I made more mistakes because I talked too much—that’s why now I know that that saying is true. And so far it’s going great!

Diether Ocampo: Live each day as if it’s my last day and free myself from worry. I’m doing a great job so far!

Francis Magalona: My resolution is to work hard and work out harder. And, yes, I’m still into it. I’m into boxing again and even worked out December 25, 27 and 30 and even January 1. Now that’s masipag (chuckles).

Drew Arellano: My New Year’s resolution is to work harder. So far so good. I don’t complain about my schedule even if I hardly get to rest these days.

Toni Gonzaga: To be more independent...and, yes I’ve been living it. So far so good! I even bought a new car which I already drive, so I’m now more mobile!

KC Montero: It was to stop partying...and my resolution was broken one second into the New Year!

Ruby Rodriguez: I told myself, “Ruby, you’re addicted to food! Control your addiction, do your best to lose unnecessary and excess weight. Start by not eating rice!” So far, I’ve not eaten rice since January 1!

Cassandra Ponti: My New Year’s resolution was to quit smoking and attend a dance workshop. I’ve quit smoking and I have already attended a session in a workshop. I hope I can attend more if my schedule isn’t as crazy.

Dion Ignacio: Siguro it’s to eat more healthy. No more junk food and take care of my body more. Basta healthy living and so far I don’t eat too much fastfood like I used to (chuckles).

Bam Romana: I have three resolutions—to lose weight, to concentrate more on my studies and to stay single for a year (chuckles). To stay single, that’s very easy! To lose weight, I always tell myself that every year e but this time I’m really going to try. And about my studies, I already got my groove back and have been hitting the books so far.

Gabb Drilon: My New Year’s resolution is not to make any. So nagawa ko na siya he he!

Kristoff Abrenica: My New Year’s resolution is to keep myself healthy by going to the gym. So far I’ve been doing it and I am glad to be following through with it.

Mikee Lee: My resolutions are to become a better actor, host and student. I plan to keep improving from now on and I think I’m doing a good job at it. I’ve never been more focused!

Gerald Anderson: Not to get bulol anymore. And I don’t think I’m going to be successful at it (laughs).

Is the sixth time a charm?

That’s the question for the great director Martin Scorsese, who has been five times nominated for a Best Directing Oscar and has never won. Now, his film The Departed will almost certainly be nominated January 23 in a number of categories, directing among them, and the question is: Will he at last get to make the speech with the golden statuette in his hand, signifying whatever it is that an Oscar signifies?
